GREEN HYDROGEN THE CLEAN ENERGY THAT WILL CHANGE OUR WORLD
Everything points towards green hydrogen as the fuel that we’ve been waiting for. Since it is produced using renewable energy sources, green hydrogen does not emit greenhouse gases. It is a fuel that is easy and safe to transport: it can be taken it wherever it’s needed. It can also be stored, offering an energy supply that is not jeopardized by adverse weather conditions, unlike other technologies.
All of these characteristics of hydrogen make it key to energy decarbonization and the fight against climate change, one of the goals set by the United Nations in its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
HOW IS GREEN HYDROGEN OBTAINED?
Green hydrogen is produced using a technology known as electrolysis. The process involves passing an electric current through water using a device known as an electrolyser. This separates the hydrogen from the oxygen.
If the energy used for this process comes from renewable sources, the output is known as green hydrogen or renewable hydrogen. If the energy comes from burning fossil fuels, the result is called grey hydrogen.
Renewable energy sources that do not produce carbon dioxide.
High-voltage connection to 400 kV.
Water supply.
20 MW electrolyser to separate the hydrogen and oxygen molecules contained in water.
Compressors to reduce the volume of the hydrogen and oxygen produced.
Storage tanks.
MAIN APPLICATIONS
The characteristics of green hydrogen mean it has multiple applications.
FUEL FOR THE TRANSPORT SECTOR
One of the main uses of green hydrogen is in transport. Fleets of public or private vehicles can refuel with green hydrogen at the hydrogen generator that will be built next to the BenortH2 plant on the A8 motorway.
FUEL FOR INDUSTRY
Energy-intensive industries are expected to be the main consumers of this green hydrogen. Industry will be able to become one of our biggest users as of the initial phase.
CLEAN ENERGY GENERATION
The CCGT will reduce emissions from the electricity generation process, since part of its source of supply will be substituted with green hydrogen. Businesses and homes will be able to obtain clean electricity generated by a fuel cell.
H2 INJECTION INTO THE EXISTING GAS NETWORK
Green hydrogen can be injected into gas pipelines.
This means that H2 injection can be used to serve industry and homes using the existing gas pipeline network.
